How to make a mood board on your iPhone
A mood board collects the look of something before it exists: a room, a wardrobe, a party, a project. On an iPhone you can build one from the photos you take and save, and keep its palette with it.
Collect first
- Take photos as you go: a fabric in a shop, a wall colour, the light in a room at a certain hour. Save screenshots of things you like. An album in Photos keeps them together.
- Aim for a range: one photo that sets the mood, a few for materials and textures, a few objects, and the colours.
- Photograph samples in daylight. Paint and fabric look different under lamps.
Build it in Pin & Print
- Start a board. Tap New board and choose a mood board template, Interiors or Personal style, or a blank board.
- Add your photos from Photos, Files or Paste. Make the photo that sets the mood the largest.
- Take the palette from it. Select that photo, open Style and tap Put this photo’s five colours on the board. You get a strip of paint chips with their hex codes, ready to take to a paint shop or into a design app. The eyedropper picks single colours for the paper, the words and the stickers.
- Cut out objects. Style › Cut out the subject turns a photo of a chair, a lamp or a pair of shoes into a cut-out with a sticker edge.
- Label things. Use Text for names, sizes or where to buy. Stickers, washi tape and pins give it a scrapbook feel.
- Pull it together. In the Board sheet under Design, Make it cohesive brings every photo towards one palette: Warm, Calm or the colours of one of your photos, at Light, Gentle or Strong. Arrange for me offers three layouts if you want a starting point.
Keep it, share it, print it
- Put it on your Lock Screen while the project lasts: Share and print › Wallpaper.
- Print it at home on Letter or A4, or export a poster file. See how to print a board as a poster.
- Export a board file to keep a copy in Files or move the board to another iPhone.
Tips for a room
- Start from the room as it is: a photo of the space, then what changes.
- Five colours are enough: two neutrals, one main colour and two accents.
- Mix finishes. A photo of wood, linen or stone next to the colours shows what a swatch can’t.
